Although Art & I did not know Michael, I work with his mother Sue. Our hearts break for the parents. We just can't imagine what this does to a parent or a family, its a violent act against nature. I put my uniform on everyday and think to myself that this is what you, Pat and I wanted to do. Then I think why? I did not know Michael personally, but did see him occasionally while he was on patrol. I saw him that day - on my way home from work, smiling and so very much alive, and then within a few hours, such a fine young man, police officer, brother, son was gone. I went through every emotion, shock, horror, disbelief, anger and I cried, why did this happen, how did this happen, who could have prevented it. Well I did not get the K9. Sore Subject so I will say no more. Besides the wrong person could read this and I would get jammed up for something I wrote. Pat is off protecting the country. All those weekends of him playing soldier are coming in handy now. He is in Georgia with his MP unit running a base. I got an award for rescuing an elderly female from a house fire. Pat and Lesniowski helped me. I was presented the first ever Chestertown Police Department Lifesaving Medal. It is pretty nice. With out you looking over me who knows what would have happened when I ran into the burning house to drag the lady out. I will write again soon. I am getting ready to get off. Before I go will you give me a little luck. I am going Turkey hunting next week, just thought you could send a bird my way. It hasn't and won't be the same without you. Mike, Holidays aren't the same without you around. I couldn't help but break down Christmas night thinking about this year gone past and all of the things that have happened. I think about and your family all the time. You are one of the greatest persons that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. God sure did recruit one of the best Police Officers for his force. Michael, although I never knew you, I met your parents and Stephanie at the first COPS meeting they attended. They are wonderful people and are doing their best to deal with a horrible tragedy. I know how they feel, as I am also a police survivor. I became involved with COPS and now serve on the board of directors of the Maryland chapter. I would also like to thank Jason for answering my email and directing me to this moving site. I know that you and the (unfortunately) many officers who went before you, my husband included, are watching over all of us. Officers like you make us all proud.

It is hard to believe that a year has since you were taken from your family and friends. Today we will be at the dedication of the memorial that the town of Centreville has constructed in your honor. There is still not one day that goes by that you are not in my thoughts and prayers. I was awarded a plaque on Saturday the 9th naming me the Knights of Columbus Kent County Chapter Police Officer of the Year. My problem with that is that there is no such thing as a police officer of the year. Every one of us that do this job, day in and day out, all of us that put a vest, gun, badge and uniform on are Police Officers of the Year. Michael, you are one of my hero's. You showed me that no matter what in life may happen, you have to move on and rise above the lows, for this I thank you. I miss you tremendously and wish you were here to hang with us. It has taken me more than a year to sign this memorial page, even though I visit it often. I have trouble finding the words to express the way that I have been feeling. We are honored to have a son named Michael Scott Nickerson, II. He will know all about his namesake. Dutch is learning about you - he points at you picture and says "that Uncle Michael", and when we drive past our church, he knows that is where his Uncle Michael is. It hurts me to know that my boys will never get to know you, but I am certain that they will know you through countless stories that Albert will tell them. Micheal as we were riding down the road today we thought of you. Every time a blue Dodge like yours goes by Dave and I just look at each other and remember all the times we all laughed and joked with each other. You are missed so much by everyone. Well brother, once again the odds have been stacked against me. I thought that I would be able to finally get out of the town for a job with QA Sheriffs' office, but Earl didn't win the race and I don't think the Sheriff will give me a job. I am sitting here at 0220 hours after a busy late shift in Chestertown trying to figure out why I can't get ahead. Our Chief is a great guy but I just don't see things moving as fast as I thought they would or should. The council won't move on a retirement for us even after they said that we would be in the State retirement by July 1. Well here it is September 17 and we still have nothing. I think that I have a total of $700.00 give or take a few in that fabulous retirement that we currently have. That is with five almost six years on. I am thoroughly convinced that the Mayor and Council don't care as long as we direct traffic at all the parades and are present for the wonderful Tea Party festival, and keep the hotspot out of their back yards. I pray to God every day to help us out and I know that you hear me and are talking to him telling him to assist us by making them think about what it would be like to be in our shoes. I wish I could see and talk to you man. At least then I know that you would have something funny to say that would make me laugh and take my mind off of all of these things. I need you to send an extra blessing or two down to Pat's dad. He is not doing to well and I am really worried about Pat. You know how he is, he keeps his emotions bottled up inside and won't let anyone in. I honestly think that he believes as long as he is keeping busy with work, which he is finally back to, that the things that are going on are not real. I can't get him to think or talk about anything but work and his new K9 that he is training. You know that this hunting season and for that matter the last will not and was not the same. I know that you are with me every time that I go out but it is not the same as having you around. You know when you shoot after me and kill the bird then tell me how good of a shot that I made. Well now I am sitting here crying so I will get off the computer. Please continue to watch over all of us, the town has become some what of a war zone between the college and the local knuckleheads. According to my sources (informants) Ope and I have been told that it would be easier for them (informants) to tell us who is not carrying a gun, then it is for them to tell us who is carrying a gun. The only peace that I have with knowing this is that you are watching over me and if something were to happen to me I would be on the force in heaven with you, writing tickets and kicking the bad seeds out and down to hell. I do have but one favor to ask, could you talk to the big man (Chief) AKA God and ask him to give the town council some brains, once again they have screwed the police. They wasted their money on a damn visitors center and could not afford to give the police leops. However the rest of the town employees made out great since the police did all the leg work and campaigning for a retirement. The funniest part is we added up the total years of service for the sworn officers and it equaled 73 total years. just between two other employees of the town their total years of service was 77 or 78 years.
